Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered a comprehensive overhaul of Lahore’s urban traffic management system, directing authorities to designate dedicated bicycle lanes along the city's key arteries. Chairing a high level review meeting, the Chief Minister expressed strong concern over recurring traffic violations by utility and sanitation vehicles operating under the Suthra Punjab Programme.
Following the tragic death of a young girl involved in a collision with a Suthra Punjab vehicle, Ms Nawaz insisted that all operational fleets must adhere strictly to traffic regulations without exception. To safeguard pedestrians, the provincial administration is introducing digital camera monitoring alongside a pilot project on The Mall to strictly enforce zebra crossing compliance.
The government is also evaluating the installation of emergency alert buttons at major pedestrian crossings, whilst developing Ferozepur Road as a model corridor for urban traffic regulation. In addition, mandatory covering requirements have been imposed on all cargo tractor trolleys and sanitation vehicles to prevent debris spillage on public roads.
The Chief Minister further instructed traffic authorities to take immediate measures to alleviate chronic congestion at major entry and exit points, notably Shahdara and Thokar Niaz Baig, ensuring uninterrupted vehicle flow. New signal installations have also been approved for key intersections, including Pine Avenue and Jati Umra Chowk, to streamline daily commuting across the metropolis.
