Lahore: Pakistani film Mango Jutt is set to arrive in cinemas tomorrow amid competition for screen space from Hollywood and Indian Punjabi productions, raising questions about its ability to secure sufficient screenings during its opening week.
The film, the only Pakistani production scheduled for release in the current window, is reportedly receiving fewer screenings than Hollywood's Street Fighter across cinemas in Punjab, Sindh and other parts of the country.
The competition extends to both multiplexes and single screen cinemas, where distributors and exhibitors are allocating more shows to competing releases.
Indian Punjabi film Thaapi has also reportedly secured more screenings than Mango Jutt at some single screen venues, adding to the challenges facing the Pakistani production.
The limited allocation of shows could affect the film's opening week performance, particularly as the number and timing of screenings influence audience access and ticket sales.
Beyond competition from international productions, Mango Jutt has faced criticism during its promotional campaign.
Its trailer and promotional artwork drew negative reactions ahead of release, while reports of a disagreement involving the film's writer and director over the final edit added to the discussion surrounding the production.
The reported dispute has raised questions about the film's creative direction, although the circumstances surrounding the disagreement have not been independently confirmed.
With its theatrical release approaching, the film's performance will depend partly on audience response and its ability to generate positive word of mouth. Cinema operators may reconsider screening allocations in the following week based on ticket sales, occupancy rates and audience demand.
The release also highlights the competition Pakistani productions face in securing cinema screens when scheduled alongside international films. For Mango Jutt, opening week attendance and audience reception will be important factors in determining whether it can secure additional shows and extend its theatrical run.
