A major power breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping complex early Sunday brought 10 water pumps to a halt, raising concerns over water supplies to parts of Karachi.
The electricity supply was interrupted around 6am across different phases of the Dhabeji pumping facility, according to a spokesperson for the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC).
K-Electric attributed the outage to a cable fault in its power system, which affected the electricity network serving the pumping facilities.
The breakdown stopped operations at the Third Phase, Fourth Phase and K-III pump houses. Out of the facility’s 21 pumps, 10 were forced to shut down following the power failure.
KW&SC contacts K-Electric for early restoration
The Water Corporation said its officials are in continuous contact with K-Electric management regarding the power failure and have requested an early restoration of electricity to the affected pumping stations.
The disruption could lead to a partial reduction in water supplies to different parts of Karachi if the affected pumps remain out of operation.
KW&SC officials said the affected pumps will be restarted once electricity is restored to the pumping facilities. The corporation is also monitoring the situation to limit the impact of the breakdown on the city's water supply network.
The restoration of power is therefore important for the pumping stations to resume normal operations and for water distribution to return to routine levels.
