Islamabad: Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah Khan has stated that any official move to create new provinces in Pakistan remains at an initial stage and could take six to eight months to navigate parliament and its relevant committees. Speaking to journalists in Lahore on Sunday, September 13, 2026, the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML N) senior leader clarified that his party had not initiated any proposal to divide existing provinces, asserting that major constitutional and political changes should be formally presented and debated on the floor of the house rather than introduced at economic forums.
Addressing intra party views on administrative divisions in Punjab, Sanaullah noted that PML N's local leadership holds differing perspectives regarding Bahawalpur, with some favouring a separate Bahawalpur province and others preferring to maintain its administrative connection with Lahore rather than merging it into a proposed South Punjab entity.
He added that parliamentary deliberations on provincial restructuring could eventually produce proposals for smaller administrative units or lead to renewed focus on local government elections. On wider political matters, Sanaullah acknowledged that while back channel communications with Pakistan's PTI founder, Imran Khan, might be occurring behind the scenes, such engagements carry significant political consequences for those involved.
