Karachi: Sindh has approved an additional Rs 14.9 billion wheat support package aimed at growers with up to 25 acres, as the province prepares for the next wheat season.
The Sindh cabinet approved the package on Thursday, covering farmers who own up to 25 acres of land. Officials said the scheme is expected to benefit around 550000 wheat growers across the province.
The package includes a subsidy for DAP fertiliser or an approved alternative. Farmers who supply wheat to the Sindh Food Department will receive an additional incentive based on the quantity they provide.
That procurement incentive has been doubled from Rs1000 to Rs2000 per maund, or 40 kilograms. The government says the measure is intended to encourage growers to participate in official wheat procurement.
The cabinet was told that 56741 farmers supplied more than 2.04 million maunds of wheat to the Food Department during the previous procurement season. The crop covered 413507 acres.
The government has also ordered fresh registration of eligible growers and revalidation of existing beneficiaries. Payments are planned through Sindh Bank into beneficiaries’ Benazir Hari Card accounts, with digital verification intended to reduce duplicate or ineligible claims.
The package comes after the provincial government had already introduced large scale support for wheat growers through fertiliser subsidies. Previous support programmes included assistance for DAP and urea purchases, with the government using digital verification and direct transfers to reach registered farmers.
However, one important piece remains unresolved. The Sindh cabinet deferred a decision on the wheat support price for the 2026 to 27 season, saying further consultations and financial assessments were needed.
The subsidy addresses one side of the wheat equation by reducing input costs for smaller growers and increasing the incentive to sell to the government. But the final support price will also matter for farmers deciding how much wheat to plant and where to sell it.
