Riyadh: Saudi Arabia’s air defence units successfully thwarted a series of coordinated aerial attacks launched by Yemen’s Houthi movement on Saturday, intercepting both unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and ballistic missiles targeting strategic urban centres.
According to an official statement issued by the spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, coalition forces detected and destroyed two combat drones heading towards the capital city of Riyadh. Simultaneously, air defence batteries intercepted two ballistic missiles fired towards Khamis Mushait, a south western city hosting a major Royal Saudi Air Force base.
The military coalition confirmed that all incoming projectiles were neutralized prior to reaching their intended targets, preventing civilian casualties and infrastructure damage.
Escalation Warnings and Regional Reaction
Following the strikes, Hezam Al-Assad, a member of the Houthi Political Bureau, issued a sharp statement signaling further military operations across the border.
Despite the operation’s strength, scope, and impact, our armed forces view it as merely a small-scale rehearsal for a full scale escalation."— Hezam Al Assad, Member of the Houthi Political Bureau
The renewed cross-border hostilities drew immediate criticism from regional diplomatic bodies. Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), released a statement firmly condemning the Houthi movement's actions.
"This dangerous escalation constitutes a flagrant violation of the Kingdom’s sovereignty and poses a direct threat to the security and safety of civilians and the stability of the region," Albudaiwi stated.
The coordinated interception comes amid heightened vigilance across the Arabian Peninsula, as regional allies and international observers closely monitor security developments along the Saudi Yemeni frontier.
