Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf remained divided on Friday over whether to proceed with its planned march to Islamabad on September 27, as one party leader linked postponement to the acceptance of three demands, the party spokesperson rejected reports of any such proposal, and authorities tightened security across the capital and parts of Punjab.
PTI lawyer Naeem Haider Panjutha said the march could be postponed if the government guaranteed elections within six to eight months, secured the release of Imran Khan and other political prisoners through legal proceedings, and established a judicial inquiry into the events of May 9 and November 26.
Panjutha warned that the party would proceed with the protest if the government ignored the demands.
PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram, however, said no postponement proposal was under consideration at any party forum. He maintained that only Imran Khan could delay the march and said any government offer would first require a meeting with the imprisoned party founder.
PTI leaders also met at the opposition chamber in the Senate to discuss preparations, the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and concerns relating to provincial autonomy.
The uncertainty comes as the federal and provincial authorities expand security arrangements. The government has authorised the deployment of Punjab Rangers in Islamabad and several Punjab districts until October 5.
Rangers have been deployed under laws allowing them to assist civilian authorities in maintaining order and responding to violence. Officials have also placed barricades on routes leading towards Islamabad.
The Punjab government has requested the restriction or jamming of mobile and internet services at selected locations in Rawalpindi and Attock on September 27.
Restrictions under Section 144 are already in force in Islamabad and Punjab. Section 144 allows local administrations to temporarily prohibit gatherings and certain activities when officials believe public order may be threatened.
The march is part of PTI’s continuing campaign for Imran Khan’s release, fresh elections and investigations into previous confrontations between the party, police and security forces.
