Karachi: A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) engineer was shot dead by an unidentified motorcyclist in Karachi's Gulistan e Jauhar on Sunday, with police treating the incident as a suspected targeted killing.
The victim, identified as 54 year old, was attacked in Block 13, within the jurisdiction of Sharea Faisal Police Station, after leaving his residence on Ramsha Avenue to buy bread.
According to the Station House Officer (SHO), an armed motorcyclist opened fire on Ahmed before fleeing the scene.
The victim sustained a fatal gunshot wound, while three other bullets struck a nearby parked vehicle.
He was taken to a private hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. His body was subsequently transferred to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for a postmortem examination and other legal formalities.
Police rule out robbery, examine CCTV footage
Police ruled out robbery as the apparent motive because the victim’s mobile phone, wallet and other personal belongings were found intact.
SHO Butt said initial findings suggested a targeted attack, although investigators did not establish why the victim was killed.
Police obtained CCTV footage from the area to reconstruct the incident and identify the attacker.
According to investigators, the footage shows Ahmed crossing the road shortly before the shooting. Another portion reportedly shows a motorcyclist leaving the area.
The Crime Scene Unit collected four spent bullet casings and other evidence from the location.
Police did not identify or arrest a suspect at the time of reporting.
Victim's family contacted as investigation continues
Investigators contacted the victim’s brother, who was travelling from Lahore to Karachi following the killing.
SHO Butt said further formal proceedings to determine the motive and identify those responsible would begin after the brother's arrival.
Police did not establish whether the killing was connected to Ahmed's employment, a personal dispute or another motive.
The investigation remains open, with CCTV recordings, forensic evidence and statements from the victim's family expected to help establish the circumstances of the attack.
Authorities did not announce any arrests or confirm a motive.
