Karachi: Pakistani filmmaker Kamran Faiq's short film The Last Glance has qualified for consideration at the 2028 Academy Awards following its victory at the 21st Tasveer Film Festival, held in Seattle, United States, from October 13 to 18 October.
The film received the Jury Award for Best Short at the festival, which is recognised as an Oscar qualifying event. The award makes the production eligible to enter the Academy Awards selection process, although it does not constitute an Oscar nomination.
Speaking to Dawn Images, Faiq confirmed that his film was the only entry from the festival to secure Oscar qualification through the award. He explained that only a limited number of short films qualify for consideration each year from thousands of productions worldwide. Faiq also disclosed plans to bring an Oscar nominated actor on board as an executive producer to support the film's awards campaign.
What is The Last Glance about?
Written, directed and produced by Faiq, The Last Glance follows a family forced to flee its village under the cover of darkness to escape violence. The film stars Adnan Shah Tipu, Areej Ayub and Fahad Hashmi.
Umer Peerzada serves as producer, while Khalid Saeed Khan is the executive producer. Mike McNamara and Armeena Rana Khan are credited as co producers. The production explores displacement and the experiences of families confronted with insecurity, placing a Pakistani story before international festival audiences.
Recognition beyond the Tasveer Film Festival
The film's achievement in Seattle follows another international award. It recently won Best International Short Film at the Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival in Canada.
On 22 October, Faiq announced that The Last Glance had also been selected as one of eight finalists for the short film programme at the Asian World Film Festival in Los Angeles. According to the filmmaker, the finalists were chosen from submissions representing more than 50 Asian countries. The selection provides another international platform for the production as it prepares for the Academy Awards consideration process.
What does Oscar qualification mean?
The Tasveer Film Festival is an Oscar qualifying South Asian film festival, meaning that winners of designated awards can become eligible for consideration by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
However, eligibility does not guarantee a place on the Academy's shortlist or a nomination. The Last Glance must still progress through the Academy's selection process before it can compete for an Oscar. For Pakistan's independent film industry, the qualification represents an opportunity for international exposure, particularly for short films seeking recognition beyond domestic audiences.
The film's progress will now depend on the subsequent stages of the Academy Awards selection process.
