Buenos Aires: One of football’s most extraordinary eras has ended, with Lionel Messi stepping away. He announced his retirement from international football at 39, bringing an end to a 21 year journey with Argentina that transformed him from a heavily criticised prodigy into one of the country’s greatest football icons.
Messi confirmed the decision on August 31, weeks after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. The match was his sixth World Cup appearance and his final outing for the national side.
After helping Argentina lift the World Cup in Qatar in 2022, Messi returned to the final in 2026, but Spain denied him the perfect farewell. The timing of his announcement was also deeply personal.
Messi revealed that he had written his farewell message just two days after the World Cup final, but delayed making the decision public. The death of his father, Jorge Messi, in August added another emotional dimension to his departure.
Messi said he had given everything to the national team and believed the time had come to make way for a younger generation.
For Argentina, Messi's departure closes an era of redemption.
He endured years of criticism after Argentina lost three major international finals between 2014 and 2016.
Following the defeat to Chile in the 2016 Copa América final, he briefly announced his retirement from international football before reversing the decision and returning to the national side.
What followed was a remarkable second act.
Argentina won the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima and, most significantly, the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The team then added another Copa América title in 2024, completing a remarkable transformation in Messi’s relationship with the country and its supporters.
His numbers tell only part of the story.
Messi leaves Argentina as the country’s record appearance maker and leading scorer, with 207 appearances and 125 goals.
He departs after more than two decades in the famous blue and white shirt, having moved from being compared unfavourably with Diego Maradona to becoming an undisputed icon in Argentina’s football mythology.
But this is not the end of Messi the footballer.
His retirement applies only to international football. Messi remains with Inter Miami, where he is contracted through the end of the 2028 Major League Soccer (MLS) season. His club career, therefore, continues even as his extraordinary international chapter comes to a close.
Argentina has lost its No. 10.
Football has not.
Messi is not leaving the game; he is simply leaving the shirt that made his greatest story possible.
