Kuala Lumpur: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has postponed the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, moving the tournament from its original January 7 to February 5, 2027 slot to December 23, 2027 to January 21, 2028.
The AFC said the decision followed “exceptional circumstances” arising from developments in the region, including logistical complexities and travel disruptions. The AFC will submit the revised dates to FIFA for approval.
The 24 team tournament was due to be held across Saudi Arabia, but recent attacks in the kingdom have raised security concerns and disrupted travel. A strike on Riyadh's international airport last month killed at least 12 people and injured more than 300, according to Reuters.
The organising committee said postponement was necessary in the interests of participating teams, officials, spectators and other stakeholders.
The tournament will now begin on December 23, 2027, with the final scheduled for January 21, 2028.
