Webdesk: Real Madrid opened their Champions League campaign with a 2 to 1 win over Inter Milan as José Mourinho celebrated victory against his former club.

Real Madrid took control early at the Santiago Bernabéu, scoring twice in the opening 23 minutes. Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring in the 14th minute after Inter defender Yann Bisseck lost possession under pressure, allowing Brahim Díaz to set up the French forward.

Federico Valverde doubled the advantage nine minutes later after Inter goalkeeper Josep Martínez made a costly error inside his own area. Valverde challenged the goalkeeper and managed to poke the ball over the line.

Inter had controlled much of the first half, enjoying more than 64 per cent possession, but struggled to turn that control into goals. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois proved crucial, making several important saves to protect his side's advantage.

The visitors continued to press after the break and were eventually rewarded in the 77th minute. Carlos Augusto converted a low cross from Lautaro Martínez to bring Inter back into the contest.

Inter pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, while Real Madrid had opportunities to extend their lead. Courtois remained decisive, helping the hosts survive the late pressure and secure three points.

The victory marked a significant return to European competition for Mourinho at the Bernabéu. The Portuguese coach faced one of his former clubs on the same ground where he led Inter to Champions League glory in 2010. It was also his first Champions League victory since returning for a second spell at Real Madrid.

For Real Madrid, the result provides a winning start to their European campaign, although their inability to put the game beyond Inter despite taking an early two goal lead will remain a concern. For Inter, the performance offered encouragement despite the defeat, particularly given their control of possession and sustained pressure in the second half.
