Arman Tsarukyan is preparing for one of the most important fights of his UFC career, but ahead of his UFC 331 showdown with Mauricio Ruffy, the lightweight contender has also opened up about his life before MMA and shared his views on some of the biggest names around the division.
Tsarukyan will face Ruffy in the five-round co-main event at UFC 331 in Los Angeles on Saturday. The fight has significant implications for the lightweight title picture, with Tsarukyan looking to continue his current winning run and strengthen his position among the division's leading contenders.
Tsarukyan once dreamed of playing hockey
Long before becoming one of the UFC's top lightweights, Tsarukyan had a very different career in mind.
The Armenian fighter revealed that his original dream was to become a professional hockey player and eventually make it to the NHL. He spent around six years playing hockey before his path eventually changed toward combat sports.
Tsarukyan admitted that he ultimately realized he was not going to become the hockey player he had hoped to be. After trying other forms of work, he eventually found his way into fighting.
That decision eventually took him to the UFC, where he has established himself as one of the leading competitors in the lightweight division. Tsarukyan currently owns a 23-3 professional MMA record and is 10-2 inside the UFC.
Ruffy's training camp does not concern Tsarukyan
The biggest immediate challenge for Tsarukyan is Mauricio Ruffy, who has put together an impressive recent run.
Ruffy has trained with high-level fighters including former UFC champion Israel Adesanya and current UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. His recent form has also attracted attention, with consecutive knockout victories over Rafael Fiziev and Michael Chandler.
