Gilgit: Gilgit Baltistan police said they had foiled an armed attack on a seasonal police checkpost located between the Diamer and Ghizer districts.
Around nine attackers opened fire on a police party stationed at the Sargah Nallah checkpost on Saturday, a police spokesperson said. The post falls within the jurisdiction of Singal Police Station and stands near the boundary between Ghizer and Diamer.
Police described the assailants as terrorists, although no group had claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of reporting.
The officers responded to the firing and remained unharmed during the exchange, according to the police statement.
The attackers escaped by using the difficult mountainous terrain and their elevated position. Police did not report any arrests or casualties among the assailants.
Authorities are now preparing to move the police party to a safer location that offers a stronger strategic position. Additional personnel, logistical support and equipment will also be provided.
Police said district authorities were monitoring the situation and urged residents to report suspicious people or activities. They also called for public cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
The attempted assault follows earlier attacks on police in the region.
In April, three police officers were killed, and five others wounded when attackers ambushed a police team near Thore Valley in Chilas. Police later arrested 15 suspects during a combing operation connected to militant attacks.
The Gilgit Baltistan caretaker cabinet also approved institutional changes that month, renaming the Counter Terrorism Department as the Counter Terrorism Unit and authorising the recruitment of 600 additional officers.
The latest incident caused no casualties but highlighted the security challenge of protecting isolated police positions in mountainous areas.
The attackers’ ability to fire from higher ground and escape through difficult terrain has prompted authorities to review the location and resources of the Sargah Nallah post.
