A pioneering ten-year conservation initiative along the Indus River basin is achieving significant milestones in restoring natural wetland ecosystems and riverine forests. By rewilding degraded floodplains, environmental scientists and local communities are rebuilding vital ecological barriers that mitigate extreme climate impacts and seasonal flooding.

“Restoring natural river corridors allows ecosystems to self-regulate, creating resilient flood buffers while providing safe habitats for endangered river fauna,” stated Dr. Jawad Alam, Senior Freshwater Ecologist.

The long-term program focuses on replanting native flora, restoring natural river flow channels, and reintroducing threatened wildlife species native to the river basin. In addition to ecological benefits, neighboring agrarian communities have reported improved soil moisture and stabilized groundwater tables along restored riverbanks.

To ensure long-term sustainability, conservation groups are working closely with provincial wildlife departments and local farming cooperatives to prevent illegal logging and encroachment on protected wetland zones.
